CP-Based Local Branching

چکیده
We propose the integration and extension of the local branching search strategy in Constraint Programming (CP). Local branching is a general purpose heuristic method which searches locally around the best known solution by employing tree search. It has been successfully used in MIP where local branching constraints are used to model the neighborhood of an incumbent solution and improve the bound. The integration of local branching in CP is not simply a matter of implementation, but requires a number of significant extensions (concerning the computation of the bound, cost-based filtering of the branching constraints, diversification, variable neighbourhood width and search heuristics) and can greatly benefit from the CP environment. In this paper, we discuss how such extensions are possible and provide some experimental results to demonstrate the practical value of local branching in CP.

Local Branching in a Constraint Programming Framework
Local branching is a general purpose heuristic method which searches locally around the best known solution by employing tree search. It has been successfully used in Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) where local branching constraints are used to model the neighborhood of an incumbent solution and improve the bound. The neighborhoods are obtained by linear inequalities in the MIP model so that MI...

However, CP is required for actin-based...
متن کاملRandom Matrix Pencils, Branching Points, and Monodromy
We define complex projective n-space CP as C \ {0} under the equivalence relation (z0 : z1 : ... : zn) ∼ (cz0 : cz1 : ... : czn) where c ∈ C\{0}. A complex projective curve is then the set of points (a0 : a1 : ... : an) ∈ CP such that p(a0, a1, ..., an) = 0 for a fixed complex homogeneous polynomial p(z0, z1, ..., zn). Such a curve is a 2-dimensional, real, orientable Riemannian manifold, or Ri...
متن کاملA Local Branching Approach for the Set Covering Problem
The set covering problem (SCP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem. This paper investigates development of a local branching approach for the SCP. This solution strategy is exact in nature, though it is designed to improve the heuristic behavior of the mixed integer programming solver. The algorithm parameters are tuned by design of experiments approach. The proposed method is te...
متن کامل2-Way vs. d-Way Branching for CSP
Most CSP algorithms are based on refinements and extensions of backtracking, and employ one of two simple “branching schemes”: 2-way branching or d-way branching, for domain size d. The schemes are not equivalent, but little is known about their relative power. Here we compare them in terms of how efficiently they can refute an unsatisfiable instance with optimal branching choices, by studying ...
